Retro-Style Outdoor Lighting
Outdoor Lights with History: Nostalgic Forms and Classic Materials
Outdoor lights in vintage and retro styles draw on the design language of bygone eras. Nostalgic forms, time-honoured materials, and antique and patina finishes give these lights their distinctive character.
Our selection ranges from outdoor wall lanterns and courtyard lights in historic styles to nostalgic pendant lanterns, garden lanterns, and large street lanterns. We also offer reflector outdoor lights inspired by the early industrial era, as well as clean-lined designs with influences from the Bauhaus.
Vintage and Retro – What Is the Difference?
In design, vintage refers to a style inspired by past eras and their characteristic design traditions. For newly manufactured lights, the term primarily describes a nostalgic design language combined with corresponding materials and finishes.
Retro, by contrast, generally refers to newly manufactured lights that deliberately draw on the design language of previous decades. The result is modern outdoor lighting with the appearance of historical or classic designs.
Outdoor Lights with Antique Finishes and Nostalgic Glass
Materials and finishes play a decisive role in shaping the character of vintage and retro outdoor lights. Depending on their design, brass, copper, zinc, cast iron, wrought iron, and aluminium finished in antique colours can convey a historic or early-industrial character. Pre-patinated and naturally aged surfaces further enhance this effect.
Antique-style glass such as traditional German glass or amber glass further emphasises the nostalgic character of historically inspired outdoor lights, as do faceted clear glass panes.

Country Style, Early Industrial Design and Retro Style
The boundaries between the different styles are fluid. Country-style lights, classic courtyard lanterns and historic-style lanterns stand alongside industrial-inspired shade lights and outdoor fixtures reminiscent of early factory buildings.
The wide range of European manufacturers is particularly interesting: from British Country House and pub lights to German and Belgian industrial-style fixtures, as well as traditional French and Italian outdoor lights.

Retrofit Edison Bulbs and Authentic Brass Slotted Screws
Details matter: the right accessories are what complete the authentic appearance of a vintage or retro outdoor light. It starts with choosing the right light source – for example, a retrofit Edison filament bulb, whose warm light further enhances the nostalgic character of the design.
The same attention to detail applies to installation: so-called antique slotted screws made of burnished or nickel-plated brass look considerably more authentic than conventional Phillips-head screws.
