How to Install a Garden Light Correctly
Installing a garden light requires careful planning and precise workmanship to ensure both reliable operation and safety. The following steps provide an overview of the most important considerations when installing a garden light correctly.
1. Careful Preparation and Planning
Before installing your garden light, there are several important points to consider:
Choose the right location: Decide where the garden light should be installed. Avoid locations that are directly exposed to water sources such as ponds or sprinkler systems. Make sure the chosen position is suitable for the type of light and provides access to the required power supply.
Check the power supply: If the garden light is to be connected to the mains, make sure there is a suitable electrical connection nearby or that a cable can be safely routed to the installation site. All applicable electrical regulations and safety standards must be observed.
Prepare the materials and tools: Have all the necessary materials and tools ready. Depending on the installation, these may include the garden light, screws, suitable anchors, cable, a drill, screwdriver, cable cutter and spirit level.
2. Preparing for Ground Installation
If your garden light is designed to be installed in the ground, for example as a post light or ground spotlight, the ground must be prepared appropriately.
Loosen the ground or drill a hole: If the light is installed using a ground spike, loosen the soil with a spade or prepare a sufficiently deep hole to securely accommodate the spike or fixing.
Provide drainage: Where necessary, use gravel or another suitable drainage layer to allow water to drain away and prevent the light from standing in water.

3. Mounting a Garden Light on a Wall, Plinth or Post
For installation on a wall, plinth or post, make sure that the garden or pedestal light is securely and stably mounted.
Mark the fixing points: Position the garden light at the intended location – for example on a wall, plinth or paving – and mark the required fixing points.
Drill the holes: Drill the holes for the anchors or screws. Make sure that the size and type of fixing are appropriate for the mounting surface and the weight of the light.
Secure the light: Attach the light firmly to the mounting surface. Use a spirit level to ensure that it is correctly aligned.
4. Electrical Installation of Garden Lights
If the garden light is connected to the mains, the electrical installation must be carried out safely and in accordance with the applicable regulations.
Switch off the power: Before carrying out any electrical work, switch off the relevant circuit at the consumer unit and ensure that it is safely isolated.
Connect the cables: Depending on the model, connect the light's cables to the power supply using the appropriate connection system specified by the manufacturer.
Check the insulation: Make sure that all connections are properly protected and that no cables are exposed, loose or inadequately secured.
Ensure water-resistant connections: All electrical connections installed outdoors must be suitably protected against moisture. Cable entries must be properly sealed to prevent water ingress. Suitable weatherproof junction boxes, cable glands and connection systems can provide additional protection.
Important: Electrical work on mains-powered outdoor lighting should be carried out by a qualified electrician where required by local regulations or whenever you are not fully confident in carrying it out safely.
5. Testing and Final Inspection
Once the garden light has been installed and the electrical work completed, carefully check the entire installation.
Restore the power: Switch the circuit back on and check that the light operates correctly.
Test all functions: Make sure the light provides the intended illumination. If it has an integrated motion sensor, check that it responds correctly.
Check stability: Make sure the light is firmly and securely mounted. It should not wobble, move or become loose.

Wear appropriate protective equipment: When drilling or carrying out installation work, use suitable protective equipment such as safety glasses and gloves where appropriate.
