Condensation in Outdoor Lights: What You Need to Know

When the glass of an outdoor light becomes misted on the inside, droplets form or water even collects at the bottom of the glass: is this harmless condensation, or is the light leaking and therefore no longer adequately protected against rain? The amount of water inside the light alone is not enough to reliably distinguish between a leaking outdoor light and unavoidable condensation.

How and when does condensation occur?

Everyone knows the phenomenon from windows or car interiors: condensation forms when humid air comes into contact with a cold surface. In an outdoor light, this may be the glass pane, globe or cylindrical glass. It occurs particularly when temperatures fluctuate, for example when there are significant differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures in spring or autumn.

How well a light is sealed plays only a limited role. What matters more is the location of the light, how often and for how long it is switched on, and which light source is used.

A slight amount of misting is normal in outdoor lights and can generally be tolerated. However, particularly in well-sealed lights that are rarely switched on or are operated for only a few minutes a day via a motion sensor, condensation can accumulate inside the glass and eventually become a problem.

Since the introduction of LED light sources, which produce very little heat, there is often less evaporation than there is condensation. A shaded installation site where sunlight cannot aid evaporation can also make the problem worse.

Condensation or a leaking outdoor light?

How can you tell the difference between condensation and a leaking outdoor light? The amount of moisture that accumulates at the bottom of the glass over time does not provide a reliable indication.

Condensation typically appears as a fine mist on the glass, distributed much like condensation on a window. It is particularly common in the morning or when temperatures change. Condensation tends to occur irregularly and usually disappears after a few hours or evaporates when the light becomes warm through prolonged operation.

Condensation generally does not cause corrosion: contacts and screws remain dry and clean, and the outdoor light continues to function normally.

With a leaking outdoor light, on the other hand, small droplets may initially form at the bottom of the glass. Following rainfall, water can quickly collect at the base of the light, and the glass usually does not dry out on its own. Every subsequent rainfall makes the situation worse.

A greenish deposit on electrical contacts or rusty screws is a clear sign of prolonged exposure to moisture. A flickering LED light source or intermittent failure of the outdoor light can also indicate water ingress.

A simple but reliable way to distinguish between condensation and a leaking light is to observe the light in changing weather conditions. If droplets appear inside the glass immediately after rain or water quickly collects at the bottom, the light is likely to be leaking. If the light remains clear after rainfall but moisture appears independently of the weather, particularly in the morning or evening when temperatures fluctuate, this points to condensation.

A leaking outdoor light always requires attention, as prolonged exposure to moisture will eventually affect the electrical components and can lead to failure. However, even condensation can accumulate to such an extent that the safe operation of the light is no longer guaranteed.

What to do if an outdoor light is leaking

If rainfall is responsible for the moisture, the following measures may help:

Check whether the outdoor light is suitable for its location. See our separate article on protection ratings for outdoor lights.
Inspect the seals and replace them if necessary. Are the rubber seals hard, cracked, compressed or loose? Does the glass still fit securely and seal properly against the lamp housing?
Check the connections between the light and the wall bracket. Are there gaps, cracks or other openings through which moisture could enter? Is the light installed flush against the mounting surface?
If the light is newly purchased, contact the retailer or manufacturer regarding repair, replacement or a warranty claim.

What can be done about condensation?

Condensation cannot be completely prevented outdoors because even waterproof outdoor lights are not necessarily airtight. Humid air can enter virtually any outdoor light.

The following measures can help reduce condensation:

Check seals and connections. When installing the light or replacing the light source, make sure that the glass is correctly positioned and closes securely.
Silica gel packs or anti-condensation pads are recommended by some manufacturers. However, these measures can only reduce condensation to a limited extent.
Ensure adequate ventilation. In some lights, condensation accumulates because the housing is very tightly sealed and there is little opportunity for moisture to evaporate. Check whether ventilation openings are provided and whether they are blocked. However, do not drill additional holes for ventilation unless specifically recommended by the manufacturer.
Allow the light to warm up for longer. Compared with older energy-saving lamps and incandescent bulbs, LED light sources produce very little heat and therefore contribute less to evaporation. A slightly higher operating temperature can help reduce condensation, for example by using an LED light source with a somewhat higher wattage. However, never exceed the maximum wattage or specifications recommended by the manufacturer.

A little care goes a long way

It is worth noting that in some cases – for example, in very shaded locations with high humidity caused by vegetation, a pond or swimming pool – none of these measures may be sufficient. Sometimes the only practical solution is to remove the glass from time to time and empty any accumulated condensation.

As with all items used outdoors, a little care and attention can go a long way towards preserving the appearance, functionality and service life of a high-quality outdoor light.
