Black as a Standard or Custom Colour
Almost all of our manufacturers offer outdoor lights in black, usually as a standard finish. Where black is not available as standard, many models can be ordered with a custom black finish based on the RAL colour chart.
Black outdoor lights combine aesthetics with practicality. They enhance outdoor spaces while providing reliable illumination that is both functional and decorative.
Black Outdoor Lights with RAL Classic Finishes
The internationally recognised RAL system defines colours using four-digit codes. By far the most commonly used black for outdoor lights is RAL 9005 Jet Black.
Depending on the manufacturer and model, different surface finishes are available. In addition to gloss finishes, there are matte and satin finishes, each giving the light a distinct character. Other, slightly lighter black shades in the RAL Classic colour system include:

Particularly with historic or individually crafted outdoor lights, choosing the right shade of black can make a noticeable difference to the overall appearance.
Naturally Dark Finishes for Outdoor Lights
Black does not necessarily have to be a painted finish. Dark patinas on brass or zinc can be an interesting alternative to traditionally black-painted outdoor lights.
Examples include gunmetal patina and patinated zinc, such as those offered by Lumin'art. Depending on the light and surface texture, these finishes can appear almost black while retaining a more distinctive, material-focused character.
Dark grey, black-grey and black-green can also provide interesting alternatives to pure black. Particularly on historic and handcrafted lights, these finishes can create distinctive accents on a façade.

Black is also a popular choice for garden and outdoor lighting. Wall lights and gate lanterns, pedestal lights, bollard lights and other garden fixtures are available in a wide range of RAL colours, including Jet Black, as well as traditional finishes such as matte antique black.

Anyone walking through a historic German town will frequently encounter black street and old-town lanterns. The widespread use of black has historical roots, but there is also a practical advantage: subtle variations in colour are less noticeable on black than on shades of grey.
Alongside black and anthracite, fir green RAL 6009 is one of the traditional colours used for outdoor lights and historic street lanterns. This deep green works particularly well with historic buildings and provides an attractive alternative to black.
