Copper Outdoor Lights

Premium Copper Outdoor Lighting in Country-House, Industrial and Historic Styles

Copper is one of the finest materials for outdoor lighting – and one of the most durable. When freshly worked, it has a warm, reddish-gold sheen that gives entrances, terraces and gardens an inviting, high-quality touch. Copper's appearance suits both classic and modern architectural styles.

Copper – the Ideal Material for Premium Lighting

Outdoor copper lights were once reserved for the wealthy and the nobility, since copper is heavy and demanding to work with. Even today, high-quality copper outdoor lights are rare, as only a few manufacturers have mastered the precise craftsmanship copper requires. Like brass, bronze and zinc, copper is an ideal material for outdoor lighting. What makes copper lights special: they change over time. Through wind and weather, a natural patina gradually forms – from a warm copper tone through delicate brown to a rich verdigris. This gives every light its own individual character, and it only grows more beautiful over the years.

Outdoor Lighting with Copper Patina

Some manufacturers offer pre-patinated copper outdoor lights, in which special processes – such as pickling combined with controlled humidity and heat – deliberately accelerate the natural oxidation process, so that the characteristic copper patina is already present when the light leaves the workshop, rather than developing naturally over years. The lights are then either sealed with a clear lacquer to slow down further patination, or left untreated to continue weathering naturally.

Benefits and Uses of Copper Lighting

  • Over time, copper develops a natural patina that gives the material extra character and protects the surface from the effects of weather.
  • Copper is particularly well suited to traditional, rustic or maritime settings, but also makes an eye-catching feature in modern surroundings.
  • Copper outdoor lights blend especially well with natural materials such as stone, wood or half-timbering.
  • Copper is corrosion-resistant, making it excellent for outdoor use, even in the harsh climate of coastal areas.

Alternative: Aluminium Lights in Antique Colours

If it's just the copper look you're after, antique-finish aluminium is an interesting alternative to copper lighting: aluminium is significantly lighter, yet just as weatherproof and does not rust. High-quality antique finishes such as copper black, verdigris tones or antique copper convincingly imitate the warm tone of copper, or the charm of an already-aged patina – without the colour ever actually changing over time.
